My baby loves B-I-N-G-O!

One morning after sending Hyzyd to his nanny, I came back to bring his food and other stuff, I'm so amazed to find how attentive he was to his fave nursery rhymes especially the song B-I-N-G-O!. Look how his eyes fixed to the program!

His schedule for watching nursery rhymes is only 15 minutes.

Just tonight, I find this article about Background TV disturbing and I want to share it with you:

Tue, Jul 15, 2008 (Reuters Health) — Having the television on in the background while pre-schoolers play with their toys disrupts their efforts to sustain attention, even when they don't pay much attention to it, and may harm their development, researchers report in current issue the journal Child Development.

Pediatricians recommend no TV for children under age 2, yet studies show that three quarters of very young children in America live in homes where the TV is on most of the time, notes the research team led by Dr. Marie Evans Schmidt of the Center on Media and Child Health at Children's Hospital Boston.

In a controlled setting, the researchers observed 50 children, who were 12-, 24- and 36-months old, play with a variety of age-appropriate toys for one hour. For half of the hour, a television was on in the room, showing an episode of the adult game show Jeopardy! with commercials. During the other half hour, the TV was turned off.

They found that when the TV was on in the background the toy play of the children at every age was disrupted, even when they paid scant attention to it, glancing at it for only a few seconds at a time and less than once per minute.

When the TV was on, the children played for significantly shorter periods of time and the time they spent focused on their play was shorter, compared with when the TV was off.

"Background TV, as an ever-changing audiovisual distractor, disrupts children's efforts to sustain attention to ongoing play behaviors," Schmidt said in a press statement.

"Even though the effects of background television on play behavior found in this study are small, they may have a cumulative impact through large amounts of exposure at home," the investigators wrote. "These may include poorer cognitive and language development and attention deficit symptoms."

"Background TV is potentially a chronic environmental risk factor affecting most American children. Parents should limit their young children's exposure to background television," Schmidt concludes.

I only let my baby watch in the morning with his friend and during weekend with me. TV is always turned on during weekends when my bro and friends are spending their weekends with us. At night, while others are watching TV, I'll go in our room with Hyzyd to play, read with him, pray, having some chit chats and baby talk with him before he'll fall asleep.

  1. I also read somewhere that it is also not healthy to let babies watch too much educational videos because it makes them a passive learner. ; )

    Take care!

  2. i myself also notice my cousins when i used to baby sitting them less than 2 years old, the tv could easily get their attention right when it's turned on... they would stare at it more than they would play their toys thought it's good, babies should avoid tv if possible or very less tv.. like you do to your boy

Mommy Moments- Hyzyd's playing time

Aside from playing by himself , Hyzyd's fave playmates are his dad and his uncle Bjoy-my bro. He's enjoying every minute of it! Last July 4, 2008, it's Hyzyd's first time exploring the toys in TESCO play station! It isn't yet time for him to play in there for it's recommended for 1 year old and above but he's gesturing to his dad that he want to try on! What a fun he had! We bought that green elephant because the first time he saw it and try on it, he just love it. He will not let go of the poor elephant. You'll see he's riding on it while we're shopping. Head on to Mommy Moments to see other kids enjoying their playing time!

Mommy Moments-Why Hyzvhann Hyzydyll?

The name of our son is Hyzvhann Hyzydyll (read as Hezvan Hezedel). Many are wondering how did we get the name, what does it mean and how to read it. Some jokingly commented that maybe I hate the vowels and some named him the consonant baby...he..he..he. The name was given by his grandfather (my father). We told him that it will be an honor for us if he could give the name of their first grandson. Actually, my father is the one who give us our names-from the eldest (it's me) 'till the 14th child (our youngest). We all have two given names like me I'm named after the combination of my parent's name-Benoni and Geneditha. The result is "Genebei" plus their chosen name for me, Faith = Genebei Faith . I noticed that all of us had great and unique names especially our youngest which is named Doxagennes Keilah . Each of our names has corresponding meanings. Hyzvhann is a modified name of the hebrew vocabulary Heshvan (Cheshvan). Heshvan (Cheshvan) or Mar Cheshvan ...

Mommy Moments-Rain, Rain Go Away!

It seldom rains here and when it rains Hyzyd doesn't have a chance to witness the rain coz we just stay in our bedroom, play, watch movie and sleep! For the sake of this meme ( LOL!), I prayed for rain to come and I'll let my baby witness the outpouring of the rain...Heaven heard my prayer and it came right after we came from school. We watched the heavy rain on our balcony and the baby enjoyed it. It's not yet time for my baby to play under the rain . Enjoy reading other entries about kiddos desire to let the rain go away coz " little Johnny " wants to play at Mommy Moments !
